Tyler Nez Places in SkillsUSA National Competition

2017 Aug 8

Northland Pioneer College is proud to recognize three students who placed in the national SkillsUSA competition in Louisville, Ky., this spring. The three NPC students are Jalen Brady, Tyler Nez and Marcus Elliston.

Nez finished 14th nationally in Postsecondary Carpentry.

Seven NPC students qualified for SkillsUSA national competition in Louisville. NPC students had previously won 25 medals at the state competition, showing the great strengths of the college's Career and Technical Education program.

Ken Wilk, department chair in Construction Technology, said, "I was really impressed with the performances from all of our students this year; welders, constructors and cosmetologists. NPC/NAVIT students representing our state and region embodied everything northern Arizona is known for: courtesy, hard work and respect. It was an honor having three students from the construction sciences competing for national rankings in masonry, carpentry and job interviewing. It was a great year for our construction program and students really did well."

NPC Dean of Career and Technical Education Peggy Belknap is equally impressed with the strong showing of these students. "I am extremely pleased with all the Career and Technical Education faculty and students who participated in SkillsUSA competitions," she said. "CTE students diligently prepared for these competitions and faculty members contributed vast amounts of personal time."
