Nez Obtains Internship in Field of Study

2015 Apr 28

While some take a paid internship as an opportunity to make some extra money, student Tyler Nez has used it to be become a better student, classmate and future employee.

Currently working toward his Associate's of Applied Sciences in Construction at Northland Pioneer College [NPC], Nez wondered how he might be able to start the process of not just working towards a degree, but a career. "Then one day this company came and spoke to our construction class," said Nez. "They talked about the construction business and explained they were looking for an intern -- It was something that really interested me, I asked them a lot of questions that day and I ended up getting the job."

Now working with Independent Energy Home LLC, mainly as a roofer, Nez has had the opportunity to work in his current field of study of Construction. "The job is pretty fun, construction is something I really like to do," says Nez "I get an idea of how it all works in the classroom, but when it's hands-on, like at my job, that's when I really start understanding it completely."

One role that Nez wasn't expecting was becoming a mentor and tutor for many of his fellow classmates. "One of the best parts of [my internship] is that when I get back to NPC, I get to share what I'm learning and teach others from the experiences I'm having at my job," says Nez.

Nez is on track to graduate with his degree next year and hopes to become full-time at his current job after graduation. To receive more information on future career fairs and similar internship opportunities, please contact NPC Career Coach John Spadaccini at 524-7454 or (800) 266-7845, ext. 7454
