NPC Students Earn Impressive Third-Place Finish in Welding Thunder Team Competition

2016 Nov 23

Zachary Hartnett, of Winslow, was a member of the NPC/NAVIT welding team that claimed third place Nov. 16-17 in the Welding Thunder welding fabrication competition in Las Vegas. The competition was sponsored by the American Welding Society and Welders Without Borders.

Each team was given eight hours to complete a grill/griddle, starting with raw metal and working from a mobile welding rig. At the end of the first day, judges assessed the fabrication, weld quality, safety and teamwork. On the second day, students fired up the grills to cook a Vegas steak and eggs-themed lunch for the judges. The eight-member NPC team placed third among 12 of the top teams in the Southwest!

"I am very proud of the hard work that these students put into this event," said Wesley King, NPC welding faculty at the Painted Desert Campus in Holbrook. "They put in hours of their own time to prepare for this and learned real-life job skills in the process. On top of the contest, they were able to attend the FABTECH welding trade show, providing an eye-opening experience of the grand scale of the welding industry and the opportunities that they have as welding students for their future. These students will never forget this experience."
