Calvin Stepp Helps Construct Bus Shelters in Show Low

2017 Apr 25

Calvin Stepp, of Taylor, AZ, is one of the nearly 60 NPC welding students who worked together to construct three bus shelters for Four Seasons bus transit in Show Low. Volunteering 378 man-hours during the three-month project, the students drew up the plans, calculated material needs and fabricated the units. Seniors and other bus riders benefit from the shelters in times of inclement weather, and citizens also use the shelters as resting places during walks.

Constructing bus shelters is just one of the latest community projects by NPC welding students, who had previously teamed up with metal arts students to create the litter containers lining Show Low's downtown area. The welders also constructed steps to a storage trailer at the Show Low Animal Shelter. Construction students built dog houses that were donated to the Winslow Animal Shelter and are building a house in Holbrook, intended for a low-income family, that will be put on the market this summer.

"NPC wants to be an important part of building up and supporting the communities we serve," said NPC President Dr. Jeanne Swarthout. "I am proud that several of our programs are able to fulfill local community needs while teaching students the skills necessary to be successful in their future careers. These partnerships create opportunities where everyone benefits -- the community, the students and the college. We will continually look for ways in which NPC can create more of these partnerships."
